Track Materials Arrive at Frisco Site
8/20/2010
The Museum of the American Railroad has taken delivery of the track material to be used in the Phase 1 construction project at its new facility in Frisco, Texas. Some 12,000 feet of rail has been delivered to the site by Trac-Work, Incorporated, the winning bidder for the initial Phase 1A track construction. (Click to View Initial Track Construction Plan) The rail was removed from a line near San Angelo, Texas known as the “Orient Line.” Most of the rail dates back to the 1920s and is still in excellent condition.
Known as “re-lay rail,” the 340 pieces, weighing 90 lbs. per yard, and averaging 39 feet in length will be reused to construct all of the Museum’s Phase 1 trackage. Recycling of rail materials is not uncommon in the industry where yard trackage and repairs to lightly traveled branch lines do not require new rail. The re-lay rail is ideal for the Museum’s new facilities, and takes advantage of existing materials without using new resources.
The Museum of the American Railroad is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit Texas Corporation chartered in 1962. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the nation’s railroad heritage through entertaining and educational programs.
